E.E.C. opts for ‘clean’ cars
NZPA-Reuter Brussels European Economic Community Environment Ministers agreed yesterday on the phased introduction of low-pollution cars — a breakthrough in the fight against acid rain, which threatens to . destroy Europe’s forests and lakes. Tough, new European standards for exhaust emissions will come into force by 1989 for big cars, 1993 for medium-sized cars, and 1994 for the smallest cars. The ministers also agreed that lead-free petrol must be on sale throughout the 10-nation community by 1989 and approved limited tax incentives to encourage motorists to buy new low-> pollution cars, The West German Interior Minister, Dr Friedrich Zimmermann, whose country spearheaded the campaign for tough standards, said, “We have achieved our aims. The introduction of environmentfriendly cars and lead-free petrol can begin immediately.”
