Fire under control
A big team of firefighters had a scrub fire near Waikari, in North Canterbury, well under control by last evening. At one stage 10 Fire Service vehicles were at the scene, as volunteer firefighters fought the blaze on farmland by Waikari Valley Road, about skm from the township.
A Fire Service spokesman said last evening that up to 30 hectares of land had been involved. The fire had burned intermittently for the last two days. It had flared again yesterday afternoon, he said. An engine was keeping a watch at the scene late last evening.
