'Show horror by declining tour’
Wellington reporter The Prime Minister, Mr Lange, invited the New Zealand Rugby Union yesterday to show its horror at the shooting of 19 people in South Africa by declining the 1985 tour there. Commenting on the deaths by South African riot police in Uitenhage, he said the South African tragedy continued. “While the peoples of South Africa and the world
remember Sharpeville, the South African police! mark the twenty-fifth anniversary with more killings,” Mr Lange said. Mr Lange said that in 1976, New Zealand had been invited to show its horror at events in Soweto and that the Rugby Union had failed then to do its duty. It had now been presented with a second opportunity, he said, and added that actions spoke louder than words.
