Waiau irrigation costs
Sir,—On television on Monday night Mr Prebble, when commenting on the dual air services to Mount Cook, said the Government would not breach a contract. The farmers in the Waiau plains irrigation system entered into a contract with the Government, and agreed on the necessary development after working out that the project would be economically viable. To finance this development they borrowed money from the Rural Bank. Now they are informed that not only are their water charges to be increased tenfold, but the interest to the Rural Bank is to be doubled. This of course makes the whole project uneconomic and most are wishing they had never agreed to join the scheme. It is plainly obvious that this Government cannot be trusted to honour any contract. — Yours, etc.,
F. R. DAVISON. March 21, 1985.
