Quick work Wins

Grant Shanks, a 36-year-old writer in Radio New Zealand’s Commercial Production Unit in Christchurch, has beaten the world’s best in an important international advertising award announced recently.

Mr Shanks’s 30-second commercial was for “Body Glitter,” a rub-on decorative cosmetic. It was selected from more than 5000 entries from 54 countries as the best advertisement in the open award category of the twenty-fifth annual International Broadcasting Awards announced in Los Angeles.

A take-off of the Cinderella fairy tale, the commercial features a dis-

fraught Cinders, ready to go to the ball but with only rags to wear. Along comes her “fairy God-bloke,” who rips off her rags and gives

her some sparkly BodyGlitter to “slap on her bare bits.” Broadcast on 3ZB, the commercial took four Radio New Zealand staff 10 minutes to make, and cost the client nothing extra. Mr Shanks points out that many other competitors spent thousands of dollars to make their advertisements over two days or more. Mr Shanks has worked in radio advertising since 1976, for Radio New Zealand, Radio Avon, and an advertising agency. He has been a finalist in several awards, including the 1982 Mobil Radio Awards, although this is the first big award he has won.
