Australia II placed
NZPA-AAP Perth Australia 11, the yacht which won the America’s Cup for Australia in 1983, will go on permanent display in Canberra, the Government has decided. It will be displayed in the Museum of Australia. The future of the America’s Cup winner had been a mystery since the Prime Minister, Mr Hawke, announced last August that the Commonwealth had bought the yacht for $3.1 million for display in a museum. After completing her role in the Cup defence, Australia II
will be placed on a stand 2800 km from her home waters. The announcement is a blow for the West Australian government.
On March 6, the Arts Minister, Mr Ron Davies, told the state parliament that talks had been started with the Federal government and Australia II was likely to stay in her home state and be used as a tourist attraction. She would- have been the centre of attraction and a tourist drawcard worth millions, at the new Historic Ships museum proposed for Fremantle.
