Soccer to Nth Shore
PA Auckland A stirring 30-minute finale earned North Shore United a 2-1 victory over Dunedin City in the Air New Zealand Cup soccer final at Bill McKinley Park on Wednesday evening. Dunedin City made the early play and went ahead after just 9min with a superbly executed goal by the striker, Mark Gribben.
City continued to dominate the remainder of the first spell and the first 15min of the second before Shore took command.
The match was transformed in the final 30min and Shore was on level terms in the
sixty-sixth minute. Peter Henry, from a corner, found Brian McKeown who headed home.
The winning goal came after Duncan Cole flicked the ball through to Henry who broke deep. As he pulled the ball back, the City full-back, Mike Irvine, stuck out a leg, only to see the ball rebound into the Dunedin net.
The own goal completed an amazing match for Irvine. He had played well but been booked for two fouls and finished the game limping. Scores: Hanimex North Shore United 2 (B. McKeown, own goal), 4XO Dunedin City 1 (M. Gribben). Half-time, 0-1.
