Work for arms freeze
Sir,—l was born and raised in Christchurch, leaving in 1973 to study overseas. I settled in Rochester, Vermont, United States, and have been practising law there since 1978. I was disturbed to read the editorial and the remarks of the United States Ambassador, Mr Browne, in “The Press” of March 6. I have been working in the nuclear arms control movement and through the Lawyers’ Alliance and the American Friends’ service committee. The main focus has been to achieve a mutual nuclear arms freeze. The present United States Administration has yet to be persuaded that the capability to destroy the planet 30 times is
enough. An arms build-up is not conducive to arms negotiation. Threats and force do not produce satisfactory agreements. New Zealand’s resistance to United States international nuclear militarism is an important contribution to the cause of halting further nuclear arms production and achieving durable international agreements for peaceful co-existence. — Yours, etc., PETER L. RILEY. March 8, 1985.
