Bread up 7c
The price of bread rose 7c a loaf in Canterbury yesterday, according to the manager of C. E. Boon’s bakery, Mr Adrian Jackson. “The Press” reported last Friday that bread would rise 3c a loaf today. That price rise was correct for Wellington but not for Christchurch. A standard wrapped, sliced loaf of bread now
costs 96c. Smallgoods, such as buns rose 6c a packet yesterday. Mr Jackson said the rise was caused by a $45 a tonne increase in the price of flour last Wednesday, the wage round, and devaluation. West Coast Bakeries, Ltd, at Hokitika, has announced a 7c rise also. A standard loaf is now $1.12, and grain bread, $1.17.
