Warm weather attracts crowds to Hawarden

Warm weather attracted a good crowd to the seventyeighth annual Hawarden Agricultural and Pastoral show on Saturday and as a result gate takings were $2OO more than last year at $1345. The number of entries was similar to last year apart from a smaller number taking part in the equestrian events. The poultry section, reintroduced by demand after several years absence, had 73 entries. The president of the Hawarden Agricultural and Pastoral Association, Mr Errol Monk, described the day as extremely successful. There had been a bigger crowd than last year and more trade displays, he said. The display of angora wool was about the biggest in any one-day show in Canterbury, he said. There were about 80 entries in the black wool category. Judges said that the standard of most entries was very high. Displays included both modern and vintage machinery, underwater diving, civil defence and a variety of crafts. Deer, mohair and cashmere goats were also on display. The sheaf tossing event was well attended and top honours were taken by Mr J. Inch and his son, Mr G. Inch, both of Hawarden. Another Hawarden man, Mr C. Cleeve, came third. The winning toss was more than 10 metres. Thirty-three people entered the contest which involved throwing a 15 pound (7kg) bag of horsehair. Hawarden is a show known for the number of Corriedale sheep entered and the judge, Mr S. H. Clark, said that the top sheep were very impressive. The champion ram was the best he had seen for a long time in New Zealand, he said. "It was pleasing to see that breeders are aware of the overfat problem in the meat industry today and are doing their best to overcome the problem.” Horse championships Cob: Miss N.
