Modern container ship

Built in Hamburg in 1979, the Forum Samoa, which will service the new Lyttelton Pacific Islands run, has bulk tanks for the carriage of caustic soda and special tanks for vegetable oils. The Forum Samoa is 118.67 m long and has capacity for 310 T.E.U. including 84 slots for refrigerated cargo.

Loading is by a quarter ramp which gives access to the roll on/roll off trailer deck for mobile cargo. On deck is a 26-tonne Liebherr gantry crane for handling containers' and other cargo. On charter from Samoan Shipping Services, Ltd, Forum Samoa has a speed of 15.3 knots, with a 4500

h.p. engine. The vessel is also fitted with a bow thruster for increased manoeuverability. The Pacific Forum Line says it will not be able to carry cargo from Lyttelton to Sydney as the vessel is not crewed or officered by New Zealand or Australian nationals.
