A.I.D.S. campaign call
PA Dunedin An Auckland A.I.D.S. expert is calling for a substantial public education programme to prevent a New Zealand epidemic. Dr S.D. Somerfield, of the department of immunobiology at the University of Auckland School of Medicine, also wants leaflets on A.I.D.S. to be distributed at international airports. Dr Somerfield worked 'with A.I.D.S. patients in North America before returning to New Zealand recently.
“There appear to be no attempts being made to prevent introduction of the disease,” he said in a letter to the “New Zealand Medical Journal.” “Surely A.I.D.S. prevention is more important than Springbok tours and American warships.” Dr Somerfield suggests using television and radio in an education programme. Established A.I.D.S. support groups could supply extra information, including explicit advice on removing risks, and on safer sexual practice for homosexuals.
