Southland flood remembered

Two Christchurch rally drivers competing in the Gore Rally on April 13 hope to raise more money for victims of the January, 1984, Southland flood. Mr Robert Shand said he and Mr Bruce Asher had seen the damage caused by the Southland flood. He thought it was still worth trying to raise money for the victims a year later. “I don’t think people realised how bad the damage was,” Mr Shand said. “If we

can get people to dig into their pockets again I am sure it will help.” The pair raised money for the floods in February’ last year by water ski-ing along the Lake Tekapo hydro canals.

“People did not come to Lake Tekapo and throw money at us but the publicity helped draw people’s attention to the flood relief fund,” Mr Shand said. Messrs Shand and Asher will drive a Mazda RX7 coupe in the Gore Rally.
