Shipping news Southern Quest launched inland

The Southern Quest, originally an Icelandic trawler built to brave the conditions of the North Sea, was built in England —90 km inland. She has just returned from Antarctica, where she deposited members of the “In the Footsteps of Scott” expedition. Mr Denis Wilkinson, an Englishman, now living in Christchurch, was in Lyttelton to see the ship off on her voyage to the Ice in January. Memories came back to him when he saw the makers plate in the wheelhouse. It was the plate of Cochrane Shipbuilders, Selby, England. Selby is about 90km inland, on the River Ouse, Mr Wilkinson said. “It always intrigued me that trawlers that had to face the harsh conditions of the North Sea were built so far inland.” The ships from Selby had to face the indignity of being launched into the River Ouse sideways, Mr Wilkinson said. “It was spectacular to watch as they almost tipped over.” The River Ouse was “probably a bit less in width than the Waimakariri where the motorway crossed it,” Mr Wilkinson said. The Selby port was used frequently until the 1920 s when the draught of ships became a lot deeper. Its history dated back to Roman times, but now only small grain carriers sailed there, he said. The River Ouse flows into the Humber and so past the more famous port of York before reaching the sea. ARRIVALS Sanko Peace (6.59 a.m.), 16,605, Napier (N.Z.P.C.).
