Simmentals fetch N.Z. record price

The first main store cattle sale of the season at Addington market yesterday was marked by a record sale of Simmental steers. A pen of the 18-month steers were sold to local freezing companies for $920 a head. The owner of the cattle, which fetched a New Zealand record price, was Mr J. D. Graham, of Parnassus. Cold winds and drenching rain did not deter buyers or sellers from the market. A large yarding of cattle sold for realistic prices owing to the particularly dry season in Canterbury and the amount of outside competition.

Most of the cattle went to buyers from Nelson, Marlborough, the West Coast, and South Canterbury. The shortage of feed locally resulted in very little local buying competition. Other good sales were made by the Poplars station, Lewis Pass, and the Beltana Estate, Parnassus. The former sold an exceptionally good line of 115 2Vz-year-old Hereford steers for prices ranging from $6OB to $BBO. The latter sold 322 cattle of various breeds for prices ranging from $4BB to $664. Molesworth steers will be offered next week.

The total cattle yarding was 1643 compared with 1008 last week.

An average yarding of store sheep attracted selective interest from local buyers. Buyers were mainly interested in the good condition annual draft ewes rather than those of light to medium condition. Prices remained fairly firm on past sales. The quality of lambs offered in a relatively small yarding was lower than in recent weeks. Although the sale was described as sound, most lambs sold for less than $2O.

The total sheep yarding was 14,427 compared with less than 9000 last week. Sales included.—
