Fall from helicopter

A Royal New Zealand Air Force medic is reported in a fairly comfortable condition in The Princess Margaret Hospital after falling about five metres out of an Iroquois helicopter at Wigram on Monday afternoon.

Aircraftman Elizabeth Van Kouwen, aged 21, of Christchurch, was being winched into the helicopter

with a “patient” on a stretcher in a routine winching exercise, when she fell to the ground.

She is believed to have suffered broken ribs in the accident, after which she was taken to Christchurch Hospital by the same helicopter. She was transferred to The Princess Margaret Hospital yesterday afternoon.
