Govt leak of float decision denied

PA Wellington The Minister of Finance, Mr Douglas, yesterday denied that one of his Cabinet colleagues had “leaked” the Government’s decision to float the New Zealand dollar.

The Opposition deputy spokesman on finance, Mr J. H. Falloon (Pahiatua), had alleged in a point of order that one Cabinet Minister had told a private sector group that the Government intended to float the dollar. “I have evidence that one Minister did talk to a group in the private sector, before the float, about the fact that the Government intended to float the New Zealand dollar,” said Mr Falloon. The Prime Minister, Mr

Lange, objected to the sugS’on and said it was a . irresponsible slur. The Deputy Prime Minister, Mr Palmer, said the unsubstantiated allegation could not be made on a point of order, and he suggested that it should be put as a question in its own right.

The exchange was sparked by a question from Mr G. T. Knapp (Social Credit, East Coast Bays) on which members of the Government had been consulted before the decision, announced on Saturday, March 2, was taken to float the dollar. The float took effect on Monday, March 4.
