Jail term for ‘vicious’ head injury

PA Auckland A man who stomped on another man at a dance, inflicting serious head injuries, has been jailed for four years and three months, for causing grievous bodily harm with intent. Jason Ruka, aged 23, was found guilty last month of causing grievous . bodily harm to Danny Schmit at a Henderson dance hall last year.

Mr Justice Thorpe, in the High Court at Auckland, said the attack was made with extraordinary viciousness by a group of Headhunters. The victim is still unable to speak properly and had difficulty with his memory eight months after the attack.

His Honours said the only issue at the trial had been a question of identification. The jury had accepted evidence that Ruka was responsible and had acquitted his two co-accused.
