Invited riders add interest to today’s Whakatane meeting

Special correspondent Auckland Invited riders from the top section of the New Zealand winning jockeys’ table lend special interest to the Whakatane Racing Club’s meeting at Tauranga today. The leading jockey, David Walsh, of Feilding, is one of the 11 booked for the Owens Group Inter-island Handicap, as well as each of the next six on the list, Maree Lyndon, Garry Phillips, Peter Johnson, David Peake, Grant Davison and Jim Collett. Lyndon is being brought north by the Owens Group from Palmerston North, Phillips, from Foxton, Johnson and Peake from Takanini, Davison, from Riccarton, and Collett, from Mosgiel. The other invited riders are John Dowling, from Wingatui, Chris Johnson (Riccarton), Peter Fearon (Stratford), and Debbie Healey (Pukekohe). The draw for mounts seems to have favoured Lyndon, who secured Taled Off, and two of the South Island visitors, Dowling, who will be on Dinah’s Card, and Davison, who is to ride Sweet Hostage. Taled Off was a winner two starts back, in quick time over 2000 m at Avondale. He is a free goer, fairly certain to be very prominent. The Owens Group Interisland will be the first leg of the T.A.B. double and the TAB. trifecta. The second leg seems a good opportunity for the topweight, Eva Grace.
