Gay King gains nose win in Waimate Cup

PA Timaru The veteran Gay King came with a brilliant late run to get up and win the Transport Waimate Cup, first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Waimate Racing Club’s meeting at Waimate yesterday. On a flint hard track Gay King’s trainer, Cathy Wildbore, of Turangi, was far from confident that her charge could win. However, the successful rider, Danny Frye, said the horse was a'lways travelling like a winner and although the margin was only a nose, Gay King would have been unlucky to lose. Royal Sceptre gave his first show of form for some time in finishing second. Since a knee operation, the son of Noble Bijou has taken time to find his confidence. Yesterday he raced clear at the 200 m and looked to have the race won until Gay King emerged from the pack. An inquiry into the third and fourth placings eventually had Ocean Guard promoted to pay a dividend over Sir Ashley, which was third past the post. Sea Poppy had no difficulty in justifying her hot favouritism in the DB Sprint, the second leg of the double. Ridden by Gabriel Foote, Sea Poppy was not leading as expected but she was tucked in behind the pacemaking group. She accelerated once in the straight to go three lengths clear and won untested. Tim Lea finished fast in the middle of the track to be second, while in a blanket finish My Anui just headed his stablemate, Katiki Bay, with Sharleta also close up. Results: T.A.B. CODE: WAIM.
