Pre-race blood testing

NZPA Brisbane Pre-race blood testing of all horses in Brisbane will start at Eagle Farm on Saturday as part of an intensified campaign against nobbling. The secretary of the Queensland Turf Club, Mr David Laing, said all trainers would be required to have their horses at the track two hours before race time. “Horses not available for testing will be withdrawn by order of the stewards. Any horse showing a blood test abnormality will be automatically withdrawn and the trainer could be charged,” he said. The Q.T.C. and the Race Minister, Mr Russell Hinze, are leaving nothing to chance since the recent discovery of a high number of positive drug readings in racehorse tests.

Fears of interference with horses have cast a shadow on the state’s forthcoming $4 million winter carnival.
