AUSTRALIA Wormaid in demand

Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed mixed yesterday although strong support for a number of situation stocks pulled the market up from its early lows. Brokers said heavy dealing in Wormaid International was the highlight of trading. Wormaid jumped 37c to $3.50 on turnover of SZM shares, representing more than 7 per cent of the company's issued capital.

The Sydney broker, Constable and Guest, was believed to be seeking 10M Wormaid shares with escalators attached for an unknown buyer, brokers said. The buyer should be revealed in the next day or two.

Arnotts was also bidded up with the price rising 20c to $4.15 on turnover of 130,000 shares. Hooker firmed 1c to $2.09 on turnover of 1.5 M. Among the diversified resource issues, BHP firmed 2c to $5.56 but Bell Resources slipped 8c to $5.66 and CSR 1c to $2.71. The banks closed almost steady after being sold down heavily at the start of business. The ANZ and Westpac finished trading unchanged at $4.32 and $3.34 respectively, but the National Australia dropped 4c to $3.47. The all-ordinaries index was up 0.2 points at 784.1 points at the close. National turnover was 35.1 million shares, worth about sAusts6M, and falls outnumbered rises 204 to 138.
