N.Z. wines praised
NZPA staff correspondent London Many New Zealand wines were so good they could compete on their own merits “without apology or patronising jocularity,” according to the London “Standard’s” wine writer, Anthony Hern. He wrote that the 39 whites and 15 reds on offer at a wine tasting at the New Zealand High Commission in London last month presented a challenge not only to the tasters but also to the “Old World” conception of New Zealand as a land of lamb, butter, kiwifruit, and rugby.
Hern recommended that newcomers to New Zealand wine should try the whites first as they “seem more nearly to echo the European style."
