Philadelphia

Sir,—Realising how difficult it will be for you to stand firm in the wake of United States and British criticism and punishment, we urge you to maintain your position, and hope that other friends will join you. We believe that every nation has the right to its sovereign decisions unless they infringe upon the rights of other nations. Your decision is a legitimate and courageous one. Despite years of talks on nuclear arms control and reduction, not a single weapon has been dismantled. Instead, the arms race continues to escalate. Positive, and even dramatic, action is needed. Mr Lange has expressed a desire to develop the “deeper, non-military” aspects of the A.N.Z.U.S. alliance. We hope he will have the support of New Zealanders in attempting to do so. As people with deep religious convictions and as citizens who love our country, we offer you our thanks, encouragement and prayers. — Yours, etc., Committee for Responsible Investment Sisters of St Francis of Philadelphia. March 1, 1985.
