New Pacific shipping service
A new shipping service through Lyttelton will be launched when the 37,000 ton Forum Samoa berths at the port this week. The new service will provide the port with a direct link to the Pacific Islands. The ship, chartered to the Pacific Forum Line will call at Sydney, Noumea, Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, and Lyttelton every 28 days. A general assortment of produce including nails, tyres, building materials, foodstuffs, light machinery, and vehicle parts will make up the first exports from the Canterbury region using the new service. The Forum Samoa handles containerised cargo but the service will not be affected by the accident to Lyttelton’s container crane. Cargo will be handled by the vessel’s gantry crane from the forward deck. To handle the needs of Canterbury shippers using the service the Auckland based international freight forwarders, Akarana Freight, Ltd, opened a Christchurch office recently. As well as calling at the main islands in the South Pacific the new service connects to shipping trade to Funi-futi, Tuvalu, and Tarawa, Kiribati, through Fiji.
