Young Nats back bill
Canterbury-Westland Young Nationals support the Homosexual Law Reform Bill, provided the legal age is increased from 16 to 20. The group’s chairman, Mr Nick Smith, said that local Young Nationals believed the present laws were unacceptable, but believed that persons aged 16 were not sufficiently sexually mature to make a decision about homosexuality. “We think it is a lot more important decision than voting, which comes at 18. It is the ultimate adult decision, so 20 is the appropriate age,” he said.
