No victimisation, says tavern manager

Organisers of the Canterbury Hotel Workers’ Union have been given an assurance by the manager of the Chancery Tavern, Mr lan McKenzie, that no staff will be victimised in any way for taking part in the present strike over award claims. The assistant secretary of the union, Mr Martin Moodie, said that he was “delighted'’ that “sanity has

prevailed” and he accepted Mr McKenzie’s reassurance at “this stage.” Some of the 29 tavern staff taking part in the national strike found on Saturday that their rosters had been changed and their hours of work reduced. Mr Moodie said that the union would monitor the situation over the next few weeks. If there were recrimina-

tions the conciliation talks on Friday would be jeopardy, he said. “We are not going to sit round the table with employers on Friday if our people are being picked off in the meantime,” he said. Mr Moodie said that he hoped there would be no further instances of such “provocative behaviour on the side of the employers.”
