Senior citizen patrols suggested by policeman

PA Wellington Senior citizens cruising the streets with their eyes peeled and citizen band radios at the ready could be the community policemen of tomorrow, a recent seminar in Wellington was told. That was one way to get the community involved in crime prevention, said Superintendent Maurice Cummings.

He told the seminar at Victoria University that retired people could patrol the streets and report anything suspicious to the police. They would not investigate or become directly involved in the detection or prevention of any crime. The idea had been used successfully in Britain and the United States, Mr Cummings said. Participants would need

some training and would have to provide their own C.B. sets. “A lot of these people have time on their hands and want to feel useful,” Mr Cummings said. There would be good character checks for the volunteers and there might be an experiment in a New Zealand community next year, if funds were available.
