Murder trial begins

PA Palmerston North The trial of two young men charged with murdering a retired Wanganui sharebroker, Donald Stewart Corby, began in the High Court at Palmerston North yesterday. Russel Frederick Graham, aged 18, a labourer, and Manu Aperahama Royal, aged 25, a cleaner, both of Palmerston North have pleaded not guilty to the charge. The Crown alleges that Graham and Royal murdered Mr Corby on the night

of October 19 last year. Mr Corby’s body was found the next morning at Anzac Park, on the outskirts of Palmerston North. The Crown prosecutor, Mr D. C. Mckegg, intends to call 75 witnesses, about 50 in person, during the trial which is expected to last two weeks. Graham is represented by Mr M. A. Bungay. Defence counsel for Royal is Mr L. H. Atkins. The case is before Mr Justice Quilliam and a jury of eight women and four men.
