Coach critical
NZPA-AAP London The Welsh Rugby Union has dissociated itself from the comments made by the national coach, John Bevan, about the refereeing of the Frenchman, Rene Hourquet, in last week’s Wales-Scot-land international at Murrayfield. Bevan described Hourquet’s handling of the match as “diabolical and incompetent” and added: “I wouldn’t entertain him refereeing my form three at school.” The matter seems likely to be raised further at the
International Board meeting in Paris from March 20 to 22. An Australian referee, Kerry Fitzgerald, who won plaudits all round for his handling of the IrelandFrance game in Dublin on the same day, will referee Wales’ match against Ireland at Cardiffs National Stadium next Saturday. He said this week he was not under any pressure because of Bevan’s remarks about Hourquet. “I’m looking forward to the game,” Fitzgerald said. “This is the highlight of my visit.”
