Top cycling from Shirley B.H.S.

Shirley Boys High School continued its dominance of the over 16 years boys events at the South Island schools’ cycling championships at the week-end with wins in the team pursuit on the track and individual road race.

Wayne Eyre, the New Zealand junior cyclist, won the road title and combined with Jason Smith, Phillip Laughton and lan Curd for, the pursuit win. One of the upsets of the meeting was the defeat of Shirley Boys High School in the semi-finals of the under 16 years team pursuit, in which it was the defendingchampion. Andrew Henry jut in a particularly strong ast lap for St Thomas’ to take it to the final, but it was beaten by Linwood High School (Alex Laplanche, Scott Millar, lan Dickie and Grant Wengler) in 2min 3.935.

Lisa Gooding (Burnside High School) retained the girl open age road title; and figured in her school’s win in the team pursuit while Hornby High School won the girl road race team prize. Christchurch Boys’ High

School had riders in all grades; St Andrew’s College entered teams for the first time and a primary school section was introduced.

Racing was held at Denton Park and the Wigram air force base. Results:—
