Quiet Touch top hope at Marlborough

By

G. K. YULE

Quiet Touch and Tammera, both trained at West Melton by lan Shinn, could prove the top chances in the second heat of the D.B. Export Fillies Series to be run on the first day of the Marlborough Trotting Club’s summer meeting at Waterlea tomorrow.

Quiet Touch has to overcome the disadvantage of a second-line draw, but the little that has been seen of her suggests that the daughter of Boyden Hanover could achieve the feat. She had her first race start on January 22 and, after changing ground in the run home, she finished a sound sixth, right up with Tammera. She raced at trials on Tuesday, outclassing a mediocre field of maiden horses. It was not so much that she won that caught the eye, but the ease with which she raced away from her rivals in the straight. She looks most talented and should go close to winning. Tammera, by El Patron, just failed to catch Cuddle Me Doo in the first heat run at Addington on February 1. Had she not struck the running rail about 100 m out she might have been harder to beat. She comes in at No. 8, but will probably start a little closer in.

Smarty Pants, the recordbreaking three-year-old filly over one mile, looks much more favourably placed at No. 2 at the barrier. She started from the second line on February 1 and came home strongly from well back. She will be much harder to beat this time.

Kahu Del, fourth in the Addington heat, Luna Dawn and Ingrid Bromac are all smart fillies well capable of getting into the finish. Tumahu Hanover, Watbro Ford and Jovial Jan look three of the leading chances in the second leg, the Christensen Memorial, a race which should prove a valuable lead-up to the Marlborough Cup on Monday. Jetbet: 8
