Trial elected on charge of drug-making

Trial by jury in the High Court will be faced by a man alleged by the police to have made morphine from poppies. Douglas Marriott, aged 28, a workman, elected trial on a charge of producing a class B drug containing morphine and other constituents of opium, on December 19. After having depositions of evidence from prosecution witnesses, Mr J. F. Mann and Mrs A. Hill, Justices of the Peace, held there was sufficient evidence to commit the defendant for trial. They remanded him to March 1, pending a date for trial in the High Court. Sergeant G. G. Cleland, prosecuted, Mr D. J. R. Holderness, who appeared for the defendant, reserved his defence. Prosecution evidence was

that the police found rubbish bags containing decaying poppy plant material, poppy seeds, and a spoon, needle, and syringe in a search of the defendant’s premises. The spoon and needle and syringe were found on analysis to contain traces of morphine. Details of evidence of the alleged method of making the drug from the poppies were suppressed on the application of Sergeant Cleland.
