Fire-fighters kept busy in Canterbury heat

A spate of fires in the hot weather yesterday made the day a busy one for firefighters in Canterbury. By late last evening the Fire Service had attended 36 fires in the province, said a spokesman. At one stage the Fire Service in Christchurch had four calls in 20 minutes. Fires in stubble, scrub, or piles of rubbish provided most of the work.

A grass fire, believed to have been started by a spark from a gas torch, burnt to within a metre of a contractor’s storage shed at Teddington yesterday. The owner of the building,

Mr Ra Blatchford, of Teddington, said his property and the contractor’s equipment it housed had been saved by a fire break which he had put round the property’s perimeter. The fire, which started at 1.45 p.m., burnt an acre of grass along the eastern side of the building and next to the Governor’s Bay to Diamond Harbour road. It was attended by three

units of the Lyttelton, Diamond Harbour, and Governor’s Bay volunteer fire brigades. Firemen took about an hour to put out the fire.
