Salad foods in demand as warm weather continues

The warm weather meant that a lot of fruit and vegetables were brought to the Christchurch produce markets yesterday. Runner beans were particularly abundant and.now would be a good time to stock up and deep-freeze them. The beans were of good quality and sold from $3 to $6.50 a half-case.

Lettuces firmed in price to $8 a case and corn was in demand, selling for $2.50 to $4 a case of 30 cobs. Good supplies of gherkins, ideal for pickling, were to $2 a kilogram. Potatoes were showing the effect of the weather by being smaller than usual. Ham Hardy was between $2 and $3 a bag and Black Soil Chippewa to $5. The quality of cauliflowers also suffered. They sold for $3 to $5 a bag.

New season garlic was to $5 a kilogram and new season Dargaville kumara to $25 a carton. Onions were plentiful and sold for between $4.50 and $8 a bag but pickling onions were

scarcer, and sold to $l2. Fruit was plentiful, with apricots and nectarines both to $l2 a half-case and

peaches selling for $8 a case and for $3 to $6 a tray. Purple King plums were in demand to $3O a case.

Tomatoes were plentiful to $4.80 a kilogram, and Spanish oranges, Ecuadorean bananas, and Californian grapefruit were available.

Combine eggs and vegetable, toss with sour cream and seasoning. Chill. Arrange beans on serving platter. Cover with sour cream mixture. Sprinkle with bacon. Serve on lettuce.
