County statistics
Ellesmere County has about 725 farmers utilising 92,343 ha, according to 198182 figures from the Department of Statistics. At that time the county had 16,200 ha under crops, or 17.5 per cent of total farm area. The Ashburton County, five times the size of Ellesmere, bad 12 per cent cropping, Malvern County (four times Ellesmere) had 4.6 per cent cropping and the smaller Paparua and Waimairi Counties had 16 and 24 per cent cropping respectively. Some 250 of the 725 farms had areas of crop, which
used up 40 per cent of the irrigation water. Production was 45,000 tonnes of cereals and pulses.* Wheat covered 3875 ha and averaged 3.8 tonnes to the hectare. Barley overed 5865 ha and yielded 3.9 tonnes. Peas were grown on 1460 ha and yielded 2.9 tonnes a ba on average. Ellesmere contained 485 farms with sheep and in that year about 450,000 ewes were mated, an average of 920 per farm. The average farm size in the county is 127 ha compared with 367 ha in the province as a whole.
