Police examiner move applauded
PA Wellington The Police Association has both applauded and criticised the proposal to appoint an independent examiner. The association’s president, Mr Keith Morrow, said he thought the appointment would ‘‘go a long way to allaying a public fear that things are not the way they should be in the police.” The association had been pressing for such an ap-
pointment since the shooting of Paul Chase at Petone in 1983, he said. But Mr Morrow said there seemed an “over-em-phasis” on the handling of complaints. The association would have preferred the examiner to have a wider brief, covering police procedures and practices in general. “I am pretty sure that in any submission we will seek to get it widened,” he said.
