Roydon Glen assured of Cup favouritism

Special correspondent

Auckland One thing is certain concerning tomorrow night’s ?200,000 Auckland Trotting Cup at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting at Alexandra Park — Roydon Glen will be a pronounced favourite. Indeed, he could very well start odds on. The last Cup winner which paid less that even money was Cardigan Bay in 1961. The great “Cardy” — he also won the race two years later — returned one pound one shilling and six pence for a one pound bet when he won by five lengths over the then distance of two miles. It is unlikely that Roydon Glen will be at such cramped odds. The Max Harvey-spon-sored event has drawn an outstanding field with all the best pacers in the country engaged, except Dillon Dale. The dashing Christchurch four-year-old has drawn rather awkwardly (No. 7) at the 2700 m start. Even so, his army of supporters are confident Roydon Glen will maintain his unbeaten record this season and stretch his winning sequence to 10. Certainly, he has been immensely impressive in his latest races at Alexandra Park. He made short work of his rivals in the T.N.T. New Zealand Messenger on December 29 and scored just about as decisively in the Second Chardon Mobile Pace on the opening night of the current Cup meeting. He made all the pace last week and his time of 2min 45.7 s for 2200 m was nearly three seconds faster than Enterprise went in winning the First Chardon Mobile Pace. It is probable that Roydon Glen’s driver, Fred Fletcher, will again try for the front. If he gets there without too much trouble and is allowed to dictate his own terms, Fletcher must have a great chance of gaining his first winning drive in the race. Enterprise is the logical threat to Roydon Glen, although Our Mana, Camelot and Comedy Lad will all have their share of supporters. Hilarious Guest will also be solidly backed. Like Roydon Glen, Enterprise has shown grand form in his latest appearances at Alexandra Park. He notched a hat-trick at the Messenger meeting and last week could have taken the First Chardon Mobile Pace by a bigger margin than a length and a quarter. Enterprise is probably a better stayer than sprinter and he is not as badly off in the second row at the start as may be imagined. He is not noted for speed from a flying start and, almost certainly, is better placed than if he had drawn wide on the front row. Enterprise won last year’s Cup by three and a half lengths in the hands of Peter Wolfenden.

Wolfenden is on the sideline at present with an

injured leg but Enterprise will lose nothing on the score of reinsmanship with the very much in-form Pukekohe driver, Tony Herlihy, in the sulky. Success for Our Mana would be richly deserved. As well as winning 13 races in a comparatively brief career he has had meritorious minor placings in some of the big ones. Our Mana was second in both the Auckland and New Zealand Cups last year and he looked a bit unlucky not to be closer to Roydon Glen when second last week. Camelot won this season’s New Zealand Cup stylishly and has since turned in some good performances. He was only sixth last Saturday but the failure can be ignored because he was parked out most of the way. Hopes of an Auckland success appear to rest with Comedy Lad, owned by Mr Harvey. Comedy Lad has the remarkably consistent record of 13 wins and as many minor placings in only 31 starts. He was only a head behind Hilarious Guest when third on the opening night of the meeting and from a handy draw (No. 5) looks sure to be prominent. Hilarious Guest has also been racing very consistently. She was fourth in the Cup last year, when favourite. It looks like being a great race, one befitting the richest prize ever in New Zealand trotting.
