Britons drinking more wine

NZPA-Reuter London

Britain, traditionally noted for its consumption of lukewarm ale, now has as many wine drinkers as beer drinkers, according to recently released figures. Britons are drinking twice as much wine as they did seven years ago, with 425 million litres of light wine sold last year, said the Wine Development Board in a survey.

It said more than 27 million Britons now drank wine; for the first time equalling the number of beer drinkers.

It predicted that another million people would become regular wine drinkers for the first time in 1985, bringing the total to twothirds of the population. “A boom year is in prospect,” said the board’s chairman, Mr Don Lovell.
