Undersea cable planned

NZPA-AP Honolulu A SUS6OO million ($1.28 billion) undersea cable spanning the Pacific Ocean and capable of handling 37,800 simultaneous conversations is on the drawing board of American Telephone and Telegraph, and 21 international telecommunications companies. “Hawaii 4-Transpac 3” will be a new optics communications system, using laser beams to shoot bits of information down hair-thin strands of glass with less chance of noise or distortion than in metal cables.

An A.T. and T. executive, Mr Richard Jacobsen, said

the system would give the region access to high-capa-city digital technology, including a wide variety of voice, data, television and video services.

A.T. and T. officials expect the system to be ready for business by the. end of 1988, depending on approval from Governments and the Federal Communications Commission for the project to begin.

The cable will span a total of 7200 nautical miles from California to Japan, with booster generators every 30 nautical miles to augment the communication signals.
