Pentathlon win to Tucker
Dave Tucker was the over-all winner of the senior men’s Canterbury veteran pentathlon championship at Ashburton yesterday. His total, calculated on a scale which takes age and performance into account, was 3446 points. Tucker was also the winner of the Canterbury M5O title. The runner-up over-all was the former All Black, Bruce McPhail, of Ashburton, with 3206 points. Third place went to Malcolm Fraser on 2893 points. Individually, McPhail was one of the stars of the meeting. Competing in the M 45 grade, he produced the best long jump of the day of 5.63 m and the fastest 200 m of 24.15. Arthur Grayburn, a former New Zealand javelin champion, was the best of the javelin throwers with an excellent distance of 45.06 m. He contested the M 55 grade. Other top performers in the men’s grades included Tony Fleming (34.18 m in the discus) and Fraser (4min 28s in the 1500 m). Annette Horsnall was the fastest woman sprinter. Competing in the W45 grade, she ran 100 m in 14.95. Vai Hood, in the same grade, produced the best performances in the javelin (21.06 m and the shot (8.46 m Results were.— Men M4O-44: D.
