Dog meat bill
A bill has been filed in the Philippine Parliament outlawing the slaughter of dogs and cats for consumption. The bill was filed recently by an Opposition member of Parliament, Honorato Aquino, who said the killing of domestic animals was “not only offensive to human sensibilities, but has also been the subject of ridicule and commonly denounced as unnecessary cruelty.” Mr Aquino represents the mountain resort city of Baguio, in the northern Philippines, where dog meat is a regional delicacy and peddled at prices much higher than that of pork. The practice caused an international outcry three years ago when several British newspapers frontpaged stories of dogs being slaughtered for food in the Philippines, with pictures of dogs trussed up on four legs with tin cans pinned against their snouts. — Manila.
