Solid demand
NZPA Sydney Australian sharemarkets closed firmer across the boards in active trading yesterday, with solid support evident for resource issues and high-technology stocks. At 3.15 p.m., the all-ordin-aries index was 5.0 points firmer at 777.3, the all-indus-trials index was 4.3 points up at 1167.7, and the all-resources index was 5.3 points up at 477.8.
National turnover totalled 44.32 M shares, worth about sAust63M, rises outnumbering falls, 218 to 146.
Brokers said solid support was evident for resource issues after the slightly firmer gold bullion price but only limited good scrip was available. Western Mining gained 10c to $3.30. Comalco was up 7c at $2.40. Emperor and Poseidon were ahead 5c at $2.28 and $2.75, and Peko-Wallsend added 4c to $4.24. Among situation stocks, Woolworths was again active, the price slipping 2c to $3.45 on turnover of 686,403 shares.
High-technology issues were in demand, with Vapocure up 50c at $5.70 and Sarich up another 20c at $4.90 and a stock exchange query notice still current on the stock.
