Union Carbide sets aside $37M for ‘costs’
NZPA-Reuter Danbury Connecticut The Union Carbide Corporation has set aside SUSI7.B million (NZ537.9 million) for costs resulting from the deadly gas leak at its plant in Bhopal, India. The money is not intended for the victims, who the company says will be compensated under its insurance policies, but for
“operating, distribution and administrative costs” resulting from the accident. In early December, poisonous gas leaked from a storage tank at the pesticide plant, killing 2500 people and injuring thousands of others. It was the world’s worst industrial accident. The company said it had reduced its fourth-quarter returns by $17.8 million for
the Bhopal costs, leaving earnings for 1984 at SUS34I million on sales of SUS9.S billion. This compared with 1983 earnings of SUS 79 million on sales of SUS 9 billion. Excluding charges from the closing of certain production facilities, Carbide’s 1983 net income was SUS2IB million.
