Prescription charges
Sir,—The National Party spokesman on health has a very short memory when he criticises the new tax on prescriptions. In 1983 his predecessor, Aussie Malcolm, proposed to tax all prescriptions at
least $l.BO (not $1 on some as in the new scheme). Anyone exempt then had to claim their payment back from the Health Department. The range of exemptions proposed was extremely narrow, and the revenue raised was not to offset an improved health benefit elsewhere, but to go into general Government revenue. Mr Burdon needs to study his topic a little more carefully before he issues public statements.
