Killer from the future

“The Terminator,” which proved to be one of the surprise box-office hits of 1984 in the United States and one of “Time” magazine’s top-10 films for last year, will start tomorrow at the Regent.

Arnold “Conan” Schwarzenegger stars in his first villainous role as a partman, part-machine who is sent from the future to present-day Los Angeles on a deadly mission — to terminate a young woman whose life will have great significance in decades to come.

A young-but-hardened guerrilla fighter (Michael Biehn) is also sent back in time to protect the Temrinator’s unsuspecting victim (Linda Hamilton) from the relentless onslaught of the killer machine.

From their first terrifying fight to the deadly climax, the Terminator and Reese leave a path of destruction in their wake.

“The Terminator” features many exciting make-up effects and Stan Winston, nominated for an Academy Award and winner of two Emmy Awards for

“Gargoyles” and “The Autobiography of Miss Jane Pittman” for special make-up effects, admits that the work he has been doing on this film is some of the most complicated he has ever done.

This action-suspense movie was rated an outstanding 7-out-of-10 by Leonard Maltin, of TV’s “Entertainment This Week,” who stated that if he was reviewing the action alone, he would have given it the full 10 points. During its initial U.S. release, “The Terminator” grossed S3OM, and the producers have already announced that a sequel is being prepared, with James Cameron once again the writer-director, and Schwarzenegger in the title role of “Terminator II.”
