Nun in Rough Trade
Flying Nun, the top New Zealand independent recording label, which is based in Christchurch, is to be taken up by the influential British independent recording company, Rough Trade, reports the NZPA staff correspondent in London. The move is a result of the annual international record and music publishing fair, Midem, at Cannes, which Roger Sheppard, of Christchurch, who heads Flying Nun, attended. Flying Nun was described as “alternative independent rock,” and the music from groups like the Dunedin bands, The Clean and The Chills, drew a lot of interest.
Glyn Tucker, representing Reaction Records and Mandrill Music Studios, Auckland, said that firm contacts were now established for more lucrative markets compared with “mainly just curiosity” which music from New Zealand attracted in its first two years at Midem.
Positive responses to the electro-rock-funk band, Car Crash Set came from West Germany, Italy, Britain, and the United States for their single, “Breakdown.” Deals were also being arranged for The Mockers
