Romantic Bay to gain reward

Romantic Bay should break a run of minor placings with victory in the feature race at Te Aroha today. This is the IZH Charity Handicap, over 1400 m, the second leg of the T.A.B. double.

Romantic Bay’s last four attempts have brought a second, third and a fourth at Ellerslie and a second at Trentham. The third and fourth were in the Railway Handicap and Wrightson Handicaps respectively at the Auckland Cup meeting and the second at Ellerslie last time out on January 28. High regards beat Romantic Bay in that one and the time before — at Trentham in their Wrightson Handicap. He is missing today and there is nothing currently as good as him opposing Romantic Bay. The trainer, Colin Jillings, believes Romantic Bay has not been better since her successful juvenile days three years ago. Sahiwal, Taim, Vincette and Girl Talk are most likely to test Romantic Bay and there will be interest in the showing of Secret Ace in his first race since finishing fourth in the DB Auckland Cup. Document would need to improve only slightly to win in the first leg, the Castlemaine Handicap, over 2000 m. Document, after a long spell, is taking time to recapture the excellent form he displayed last summer. There has been plenty of encouragement in his latest efforts, however — three fourths and a fifth from four starts — to suggest success is at hand. He was less than a length from the winner, Curved Air, last time out at Pukekohe on January 19. Romantic Bay’s stablemate, Reveillia, trying a middle-distance for the first time in his present campaign, seems certain to run Siinently and Amloch to be right in form again.
