Paul Dacre continues sprint comeback

Ashburton reporter

The former New Zealand junior sprint champion, Rhys Dacre, continued his comeback in strong style at Ashburton on Saturday with convincing 100 m and 200 m track wins.

Injury forced the 20-year-old from competition last year but he returned last month with a startling 200 m win at Queen Elizabeth II Park where he recorded the best time over that distance by a Canterbury athlete.

He also won the 60m there, beating the 100 m title-holder Joe Leota (Old Boys), and on Saturday at the Ashburton Athletic Association’s annual meeting at the Domain Oval he again showed his back to Leota in the 100 m and 200 m events.

The pair are now clubmates with Dacre now registered with Old Boys and Saturday’s effort was a reversal of last year’s meeting where Leota, with 10.6 seconds for the 100 m, was 0.3 s faster than Dacre who then ran for Papanui-Red-wood. In the 200 m Leota recorded 21.9 s and Dacre 22.55.

On Saturday Dacre with 10.8 s was 0.2 s quicker than Leota in the 100 m and 0.5 s quicker in the 200 m with 21.65.

A strong wind at times hampered some of the events but it did not stop Wayne Paul (Papanui-Red-wood) from taking his third consecutive 800 m invitation event. Paul made his move for

the lead about 100 m from the line and at Imin 52.8 s he was 0.6 s ahead of the New Zealand champion, David Kett (Shirley). Michael Gilchrist (Technical) led home a strong field in the 3000 m in a time of Bmin 12.95, ahead of the New Brighton pair of Neil Lowsley (8:14.7) and Tom Birnie (8:15.9). A veteran of just a few days, Eddie Gray of Greymouth, won the associated 10km Burnett Road race organised by the local harriers.

He won in 31min 2.0 s after breaking away from a small bunch nearing home. Kevin O’Sullivan (University) with 31min 36.0 s was second and Mark Mitchell (Sumner), 31min 47.05, was third. The first woman home was Technical’s Vai Lindsay in 38min 29.05. Georgine Talbot (University), 40min 19.05, was second and Doreen Fantham (Toe H), 41min 47.05, was third.

Vicki Lewis (Old Boys) dominated the sprints, winning the 100 m in 12.2 s and the 200 m in 25.9 s ahead of Bev Peterson (Technical), 12.35, and Briar Woods (University), 26.35, repectively.

Andrew MacLennan (Papanui-Redwood) in the under 18 javelin event set a new Canterbury record with a distance of 63.44 m while the only other record to be disturbed happened in the veteran men’s hammer throw where Neil Hawke (Ashburton), taking adantage of the lighter metric

hammer, threw 32.50 m, which was a record for his age-group. Results.—
