Russian crew changes this week
About 200 Russian fishermen will pack their bags and head home this week when a Soviet passenger ship calls at Lyttelton to collect them.
The Lyubov Orlova, owned by the Far Eastern Shipping Company, is expected at port today with replacement crews for three Russian trawlers. The first of the vessels to call at port was the Grafit, on Monday, and she will be followed today by the Ruzhino and the Kremin. The Ruzhino will exchange 30 crew and the other two vessels will each take on about 80 new crew members. This is the first crew change the Russians have made at Lyttelton for about nine months. They usually send replacement crews to New Zealand during the northern winter. This was because they were able to spare more passenger ships for the long voyage south in the off-season, said a spokesman for Scales, the Russians' New Zealand agent. The 3900-ton Lyubov Orlova, an ice-strengthened vessel built in 1976, will be making her maiden call to Lyttelton, although she has visited New Zealand previously. She is expected to sail for Russia on Saturday. ARRIVALS Tolaga Bay (10.53 a.m.) Wellington. High Adventure (1 p.m.), 20,776, Nauru (N.Z.P.C.).
